Saudi Arabia's embassy in Islamabad has introduced same-day processing of visa applications for Pakistani citizens, announced by Ambassador Dr Rajeh bin Tami Al-Baqami during talks on oil storage, refinery and minerals cooperation.

Saudi Arabia has introduced same-day processing of visa applications for Pakistani citizens at its embassy in Islamabad, a step announced on Friday, 30 October, that could make travel between the two countries noticeably faster for business visitors, workers, pilgrims and families.

The announcement was made by Saudi Arabia's newly appointed ambassador to Pakistan, Dr Rajeh bin Tami Al-Baqami, during a meeting in Islamabad with Federal Minister for Petroleum Ali Pervaiz Malik, according to reports by Geo News and Dawn. The embassy measure is intended to facilitate travel and to strengthen business, cultural and people-to-people exchanges between the two countries.

The visa announcement came alongside a wider discussion about energy and minerals cooperation. Pakistan and Saudi Arabia agreed to strengthen strategic cooperation in oil storage, refinery upgrades, crude oil and liquefied petroleum gas procurement, and the minerals sector, according to a statement from Pakistan's Petroleum Division reported by Dawn.

One of the most concrete ideas discussed was commercial oil storage. Malik told the ambassador that Pakistan had approved a tax-neutral bonded policy, benchmarked against international energy hubs such as Fujairah and Singapore, under which Saudi companies could establish commercial oil reserves in Pakistan without local tax liabilities.

Pakistani officials have presented that policy as a way for energy companies to diversify the maritime transit risks associated with the Strait of Hormuz and the Bab al-Mandeb Strait, while also giving them easier access to Asian markets. The meeting also covered plans for a large petroleum storage and refining complex in Hub, Balochistan.

For ordinary applicants, the headline change is the speed of processing rather than a change in who qualifies for a visa. The reports describe same-day processing of applications submitted at the embassy in Islamabad, but they do not spell out every visa category covered or the documentary requirements, so applicants will still need to check the embassy's own guidance before applying.

It is also worth keeping the distinction clear: faster processing is not the same as a guaranteed approval. An application can still be refused if it does not meet the requirements, and same-day handling will matter most to travellers whose plans are already in order and who previously faced a longer wait for a decision.

The meeting underlined how closely the two sides are trying to link travel, trade and investment. Both sides expressed a commitment to strengthening what they described as a longstanding brotherly relationship through enhanced cooperation, investment and mutually beneficial partnerships in minerals, energy and petroleum.

Minerals were also on the agenda. Malik invited Saudi Arabia's deputy minister for mineral resources to the Pakistan Minerals Investment Forum in Islamabad, scheduled for 12 and 13 November, where further investment discussions are expected.

What happens next will be watched in two places: at the embassy, where applicants will learn in practice how the same-day system works, and in the energy talks, where the storage and refinery ideas discussed on Friday would still need detailed agreements before any facility is built.
